Knee: Patella stability

Introduction to patellar stability

Patellar instability refers to a misalignment of the kneecap (patella) in which it moves out of its normal position. This can lead to pain, dislocation and long-term knee problems. This condition can significantly affect daily activities and athletic performance. While some cases can be treated conservatively, severe or recurrent instability often requires surgical correction.

Who is a suitable candidate?

Frequently asked questions

Typical symptoms are knee pain, a feeling of the kneecap “slipping” and occasional swelling, especially after physical exertion.

The recovery time is usually around 4 months, whereby targeted physiotherapy is crucial for restoring strength and stability.

Mild cases can be treated with physiotherapy, bracing and activity adjustments. However, severe or recurrent instability often requires surgery.

Osteotomies significantly improve knee joint alignment and reduce instability. However, long-term success depends on the patient’s post-operative rehabilitation and lifestyle.

Trochleoplasty has a high success rate. Most patients report significant relief of symptoms and a lower risk of recurrent dislocations.
